Why Meeching? That was the old name for the town of Newhaven before the estuary of the Sussex Ouse was diverted in the 16th. century from nearby Seaford to near where it is today so forming a New Haven. Thus the name of Meeching fell into disuse and Newhaven was born. See the history page for more details.
